beginner judo program
We offer a 4-week program designed for students (7+ years old*) new to judo to learn the fundamentals, such as falling, pinning, and throwing, to prepare for entry into the regular Juniors and Adults classes.
*Students younger than seven can join our Pre-Judo Classes, where they will learn these fundamentals in a more game-oriented class. Pre-Judo students do not have a beginner program—sign up for a practice of your choice and arrive 15 minutes early for class.
Have judo experience?
Students who are comfortable in the judo fundamentals of falling, pinning and throwing are recommended to join a regular class.
What to expect
BEGINNER PROGRAM
How It Works
This beginner course is designed to teach you the basics of judo to prepare for entry into the regular classes.
You’ll attend 1-3x classes per week (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and/or Saturdays), where each week’s class(es) will build on what you’ve learned in the previous.
Note: the 4 weeks costs a flat rate, and no additional fees will be incurred by attending multiple class sessions per week. In fact, we encourage it to foster muscle memory and learning through repetition.
What You'll Learn
Throughout the 4 weeks, you'll learn and practice the following:
- History of Judo
- Judo Etiquette
- Safe Falling Techniques
- Pinning and Turnovers
- Throwing (Takedowns)
- Randori (Sparring)
What to Bring
You'll want to prepare by wearing:
- athletic clothing you can move in (no metal please!) or a gi if you have one
- flip flops, sandals, or slides you can take on and off quickly
- hair up off your shoulders (i.e. in ponytail or bun)
and bring:
- water bottle or sports beverage
- bag for belongings (i.e. phone, jewelry, watches)
When You Arrive
Welcome to the dojo!
Check-in at the front desk by giving your name and class type (Beginners Juniors/Adults)
You can place your things in designated cubbies and have a seat in our waiting area. Here early? We have bathrooms, changing areas, and a hydration station to top off your water bottles.
